Welcome to the third year of the Pint of Science festival in Lund!
We welcome you to three nights of exciting science talks and pub quizzes. Tonight, we feature two speakers talking about their research into cancer cells, treatment resistance and the chemistry of pesticides.
NOTE: The event is completely free and open to walk-in to the public. Registering for a ticket is optional, but it helps us gauge interest for the event!

Same same but different

Humans are made up of many trillion cells. And to make things more complicated, each of these cells has a complicated life - just like us humans. They are shaped by their family, friends and experiences. Using comprehensive molecular data from single cells, we aim to dissect just how these factors shape a cell's behaviour, to better understand their heterogeneity and how it contributes to treatment resistance in cancer.

Does Size Really Matter? When Cancer Cells Grow to Survive
Arthur Boffelli Castro
(PhD Student)
Some cells, like those in plants, flies, and even the human body, can temporarily grow bigger to deal with stressful situations. Cancer cells are no different, and they use this trick to survive treatments like chemotherapy. Since these cells do not divide, they were thought to be harmless. But these “giant” cells can shrink back to normal size and help the cancer return, often stronger than before. Research shows they might explain why some cancers come back and resist treatment. We have also found that their presence in tumors could predict worse outcomes for certain patients. Understanding these cells and how cancer cells adapt to survive could lead to better cancer treatments.
