From the magnetic storms of the Sun to the hidden trends in tax data, unseen forces shape both our universe and our societies. This event brings together physics and economics to explore how patterns emerge from complexity—whether in solar activity, the flow of energy, or the structure of financial systems. Discover how scientists uncover order in chaos, using data and models to better understand everything from space weather to the economy.
Taxes rule!
Gauthier Lanot
(Professor)
Like many, reading Foundation led me to study economics (in France). I have since worked in the UK, Canada, Denmark and Sweden researching how people behave. From ancient Assyria, Imperial Rome, Revolutionary France, Thatcherite England to modern Umeå, taxes are both a policy tool and a research instrument. In this talk I'll attempt to convince you that "taxes" rule!
From flames to photons - a structural journey
Jeenu Jegy
(PhD Student)
Nils Skoglund
(Lecturer)
Jeenu Jegy and Nils Skoglund at the Department of Applied Physics and Electronics, Umeå University, study the chemical characteristics of ashes produced in industrial scale combustion to evaluate their potential for nutrient recycling. Using both laboratory methods and synchrotron based X ray techniques, we explore elemental forms and structural transformations in these complex materials.
