Welcome to the second year of Pint of Science Gothenburg! We are excited to continue at Pitcher's Majorna with three nights of exciting science talks and pub quizzes. Each night, two researchers from biology, astronomy, psychology, and more, will share their stories and insights in a casual setting. You can also win fun prizes in our scientific quizzes. Tonight, we feature two speakers from our partner, Astronomy on Tap.
NOTE: The event is completely free and open to walk-in to the public. Registering for a ticket is optional, but it helps us gauge interest for the event!

Cosmic roundabouts – Dark matter, modified gravity, and the rotation of galaxies
Konstantin Haubner
(PhD Student)
According to modern cosmology, ordinary matter as we know it from our day-to-day life makes up just a small part of the total mass of the Universe. A much larger fraction is attributed to the elusive dark matter, which is invisible but still has a gravitational pull that shapes the behavior of galaxies like our own Milky Way. In particular, the existence of dark matter seems to be required by the rotation of stars around the centers of their galaxies, which is faster than can be explained with the visible masses alone. However, there are also some astronomers who want to discard the idea of dark matter and instead prefer a modification of the laws of gravity -- and while more data is coming in each year, the question for the true answer is still as open as ever.
