Citizen Science in Monitoring Food Environments via Mobile Apps

Maria Fernanda Roca Rubio (Postdoctoral Researcher at the IMPACT research group at Karolinska Institutet)
Childhood obesity is a critical public health issue with long-term consequences, including an increased risk of cancer in adulthood. The PREVENT project, funded by the European Commission's Horizon Europe program, aims to address this by improving primary prevention strategies for childhood and teen obesity.

Focusing on schools in Greece, Sweden, and Spain-Catalonia, PREVENT seeks to identify policy gaps and propose tailored solutions. In Sweden, the project will improve school life by deploying and optimizing the EU’s fruit, vegetable, and milk scheme, and better monitoring the healthiness of public-school lunches. To meet these challenges, PREVENT plans to introduce and monitor fruit consumption in Swedish schools using prototype smart fruit-stands, ensuring a steady supply of fresh produce. Additionally, it will evaluate a novel dietary monitoring methodology, with children and adolescents acting as citizen scientists to provide a clearer picture of the overall healthiness of students' diets.

Join us to learn how PREVENT is paving the way for evidence-based, scalable interventions to combat childhood obesity and reduce cancer risk.

Reimagining Architecture: How AI reflects Cultural Diversity in Cities

Ingrid Campo-Ruiz (European Commission Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions Individual Fellow at KTH School of Architecture)
To what extent do AI tools reflect the cultural diversity in cities? Cities today not only buildings and streets. Cities also include our personal experiences and now the suggestions from AI. Many AI tools can influence how you experience a city. For example, they can influence which routes you take, which spots you visit, or how you describe what you saw. But AI is showing us a partial version of reality. Whose perspectives are highlighted? Which ones are being left out? How does this affect power and equality in society? The built environment in cities is important because it shapes how we act, and how we include or exclude others. Understanding different cultures helps us create spaces where people can thrive.

Life cycle assessment (LCA) and batteries - can they help us reduce our environmental impact?

Emanuel Bengtsson (Researcher and Consultant at RISE Research Institutes of Sweden)
Electrification and batteries are commonly associated with terms like "green", "clean" and "zero emission", but are we missing something if we only focus on the usage? What if we consider the entire life cycle, from cradle to grave? Here, life cycle assessment (LCA) serves as a useful tool for quantifying environmental impacts throughout the life cycle of a product or service. What story does LCA reveal about the environmental impact of a battery?
