Clinical diagnoses and evaluations depend on a wide range of parameters, which evolve hand-in-hand with technological development... But with all these new methodologies, biomarkers and parameters, how do we know what's relevant and trustworthy? In this session, we will discuss cancer AI diagnosis, as well as the relevance of biological sex in neurodegeneration
Can we trust AI for medicine?
Fernando Pérez Bueno
(Postdoctoral researcher at Karolinska Institutet)
Artificial Intelligence is rapidly transforming medicine, from assisting in diagnosis to guiding treatment decisions. But how much can we really trust these systems? In this talk, we will explore how AI is applied in medical images for cancer detection, highlighting both its remarkable capabilities and current limitations. Along the way, we will compare AI to human doctors and some unexpected “experts”.
Sex matters in neurodegeneration
Lucia Manso Ortega
(Postdoctoral researcher at Karolinska Institutet)
What if one of the most important clues about neurodegeneration has been right in front of us all along? Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease do not affect men and women equally. Yet, for decades, we have studied and treated them as if they do. The differences show up in cognition, symptoms, and in the very molecules circulating in our blood and brain fluid. In this talk, we will explore how investigating sex differences in neurodegeneration might change how we understand those diseases.
