Welcome to Pint of Science Västerås 2025!

We're back for our 4th year, and this time we’re bringing you three nights of engaging science talks at Café Mosaic, Västerås. Join our researchers from Mälardalen University for exciting discussions, pub quizzes, and a chance to learn about the science shaping our world in a relaxed and fun setting.

From how your phone gets its power to the vital systems designed to meet human needs, this evening explores the intersection of technology, design, and everyday life. Grab your drink, join the discussion, and let’s explore how technology powers our lives…

The Tiny Reactor in Your Pocket: How Lithium-ion Batteries Work

Hao Chen (Associate Senior Lecturer)
You probably see batteries everywhere in your daily life—inside your phone, laptop, and even your electric car. Every time you send a text, snap a selfie, or drive your electric car, you're relying on one of the most groundbreaking inventions of the modern era: the lithium-ion battery. But have you ever wondered how these tiny powerhouses actually work? Why can we recharge them, yet they don’t last forever?
So, let’s dive into the science behind the batteries that power our world! We’ll start by exploring how lithium ions move within batteries to generate energy. Then, we’ll looked at the applications of batteries from small scale to large capacity(from your smart phone, electric car to industrial applicaions). Finally, let’s imagine future possibilities—like ultra-fast charging that could power up an electric car in just seconds!

Requirements Engineering: how users build their systems

Luciana Provenzano (Senior Lecturer in Computer Science)
How many times in a day do you use a “system”? when you buy a train ticket, drive safety home, take a picture of your dog, share a place with a friend, call your mum… Do you know that the systems you use are built based on your needs? If not, I will try to convince you during this talk that `systems are built by humans for humans´.
How? Thanks to Requirement Engineering (RE), the first activity in the system development process, that takes care of humans and their needs. RE discovers and collects users’ needs and translates them into technical functions and properties a system shall provide to meet them. RE creates, therefore, a synergy between who uses the system and who develops it giving humans an active role to shape the system that fits their needs, their ethical principles, their culture.
