Welcome to Pint of Science Västerås 2025!

We're back for our 4th year, and this time, we're hosting three evenings of engaging science talks at Café Mosaic. Join us and meet our researchers from Mälardalen University in a relaxed atmosphere where science meets everyday life.

Each night features two researchers from across MDU, sharing their work on topics that matter from sustainability to energy, climate, art and more.

For this day, from transforming wasteful industries into circular systems to building energy networks that can weather any storm, this evening raises tough questions about …

Clean Products from Dirty Factories - Exploring the Circularity Conundrum

Malin Elvin (PhD student)
In everyday life, we use products everywhere, all the time. We use cars, buses, and maybe trains to get to work. Most of us have a phone and maybe a computer or two. Or you might go to the local store and buy groceries. When buying these products, we sometimes evaluate how they will impact the environment. Maybe you buy an electric car, or you buy eco-labeled food, and sometimes you may even recycle some of the things you have bought. All of these products are being made somewhere in some sort of industry, probably inside a factory. Even though the products are marked as sustainable and can be circulated, the factories behind them might not be. All the equipment needed to produce a product also needs to be climate-smart. Why isn't it like that already? And what can we do to change it? With this in mind, the talk will explore one part of the circularity conundrum and why there are clean products coming from dirty factories!

Resilient Energy Systems, Hope for the Best, Prepare for the Worst

Simon Karlsson (PhD student)
In our modern world we are relying on energy more and more. We use it for cooking, watching tv and heating in our homes. It is also essential in the commercial and industrial sector and sometimes having access to it can be the difference between life and death like in hospitals.

Because of this, we need a resilient energy system that keeps working even when disasters happen. There are many disasters that can affect our energy system, like storms, floods and cyber-attacks which are getting more common with climate change and growing political uncertainty.

Join this talk about what resilience in the energy system is and how we can improve it.
