Computational memory of the brain: A sign of old age

Mite Mijalkov (Postdoctoral Researcher)
Our memory tends to decline as we grow older. But, how do we actually measure memory? Typically, in clinical settings, memory is assessed by administering cognitive tests where individuals have to remember and recall specific information. However, such tests are not always accurate, as they rely on factors such as the overall state of the individuals - how tired or how concentrated they are.

In my talk, I will discuss an intriguing new concept: thinking of our brains as computational reservoirs. I will explain how this idea allows us to understand how the brain efficiently processes and adapts to new information from our environment. Using this concept, we can define the “computational memory” of the brain. Interestingly, just like cognitive memory, computational memory also declines with age and could play a crucial role in predicting individual age.

Brain Predictions and the Sense of Self

Noa Cemeljic (PhD Student)
Distinguishing the consequences of our own actions from the actions of others is vital for our self-perception: if we did not make this difference, we would suffer from hallucinations and delusions. But how does our brain make this Self-Other distinction? In my talk, I will discuss how the brain can form a sense of Self by predicting the outcomes of our own actions.

The Tangled necklace in Parkinson's disease

Laurène Adam (PhD Student)
Ever thought of Parkinson's as a necklace? It might sound unusual but bear with me. In my presentation , we will talk about amyloid fibrils, the abnormal protein structures associated with neurodegenerative conditions like Parkinson's. Each protein in amyloid fibrils is like a bead on this metaphorical string. Our research focuses on understanding how these proteins cluster, causing toxicity. But we're not just studying the problem – we're exploring solutions. Enter BRICHOS proteins, potential 'pendants' on this necklace, showing promise in preventing toxicity. Join us as we untangle the mysteries of amyloid fibrils and explore BRICHOS' potential in treating Parkinson's.
