The Public and Private Worlds of a Female Physicist

Margaret Maltby is best known as the first woman to earn a Ph.D. in physics from any German university. In addition, she was an influential physics professor at Barnard College in New York City and a collaborator with many noted physicists. However, beyond Maltby’s public persona lay some big secrets. Using previously overlooked letters held by her descendants, I will show how women in physics have balanced their personal and professional lives. A look into her life reveals a fascinating and self-reflective woman who meditated on gender, research, and the social culture of science.

What could spider web-making teach us about our own brain?

Spider webs are so common that it is easy to take their intricate structure for granted. But how are these beautiful, complex structures produced by animals with such tiny brains? Orb webs require thousands of individual decisions by the spider over the course of many hours. Web-making thus displays many parallels to our own complex behaviors, which often consist of multiple steps. In this talk, I will share my research using computer vision to track spiders’ behavior on their webs.
